Comments Off on Acer Returning To Server Market In U.S.

Acer, the No. 4 PC maker in this country, has released a line of servers and storage products for the United States market.

The launch marks the company’s return, or reinvestment, in the U.S. as a server vendor. Acer sells consumer PCs and related devices under its own name, as well under Gateway, eMachines, and Packard Bell brands.

It had previously sold servers in the U.S., but it let that business dwindle over the last few years. The company said it has made a major investment in this market.

It said it has expanded its support and service capabilities, and will manufacturer its server products in the U.S. through third-party makers.

“I want to make sure that we can we build very, very quickly and deliver much faster than everyone else,” said Todd Mottershead, senior manager for servers and storage at Acer.

IDC ranked Acer No. 3 worldwide PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010, following Hewlett Packard and Dell. In the U.S., Acer is the fourth largest vendor; HP has 28.6% of the U.S. market; Dell about 22%; Toshiba, about 10%; and Acer 9%.

Acer has been selling servers outside the U.S.

For its U.S. reintroduction, Acer has released a tower rack, blade system, and systems especially designed for cloud computing, all with a number of configurations, as well as network attached storage products. Prices range from $721 for a tower to $10,499, for storage. Acer will be selling through channel partners. Read More…..

Comments Off on Intel’s B3 Sandy Bridge To Ship Today

Intel has stated that they intend to start shipping their B3 stepping 6-Series chipset chips by February 14th (today). If you missed the headlines on this fiasco, I am speaking in reference to Intel’s chipset that is plagued by the now quite famous SATA 3Gbps bug.

Intel is still sticking to its original announcement that it will ship these products by the end of February. The new stepping has several updates including the change of revision ID from 04h to 05h, BIOS update to 1.1.4 and minor metal layer change improving lifetime wear and tear with no changes to functionality or design specifications (the one that fixes SATA 3.0Gbps issue).  Read more…

Comments Off on Intel Core i5 2400 Appears To Be A Beast in Test

Intel released some benchmarks results of its Core i5 2400, one of the new Sandy Bridge processors with 6MB of cache 3.1GHz core clock and four cores and four threads. The Core i5 2400 also comes with a Turbo feature and can run at much higher clock-speed than the 3.1GHz that is advertised.  Keep in mind this depends on Turbo 2 conditions and current thermal environment.

In the benchmark observation Intel decided to compare current Core i5 650 3.2GHz core with 4MB of cache and two cores and four threads including Turbo to a new Sandy Bridge part. Read more….

Comments Off on Intel MeeGO Tablets Expected In June

Intel announced that it intends to launch tablets based on the tablet version of MeeGo 1.2 in June 2011.

It is understood that most of them will launch final hardware in Q3 2011. The tablet preview program has already started and some developers are submitting applications as we speak. Intel’s App Up center for tablet should also be ready in Q3 2011.

With the big launch slated for Q3 2011 we are sure that Intel can have some designs ready for a hardware launch rather than a paper event. Intel’s tablet strategy also relies on Windows 7 as well as on Gingerbread and Honeycomb, whatever can help the golden goal of selling more Atoms. ……Read more
